Discotek Media to bring us DVD of “Robot Carnival” and MORE!

It is truly an exciting day for Otakus, my friends.

Just a short half year ago, I wrote a review on the classic anime anthology feature, “Robot Carnival,” created by 9 of Japans greatest animation directors in 1987. To this day, that film has only been available on VHS, and was briefly shown on the Sci-fi channels weekly anime block for a few years back in the early 2000s. This however, is the first time anyone has been able to land the license to the film for a proper higher-quality release in the US, and I could not be more excited.

The animation for this film is brilliant, many unique and surprisingly visually strong short pieces here, all strung together with the simple and open-ended premise of “robots.” It’s all in the style of sci-fi short stories, perhaps the kind that Ray Bradbury would have written. But it also has a bit of that classic mid-80s cheese that only Japan could have given you in its purist and most saturated form. And it’s a shame that this film could not be seen in better quality until now.

There is no official word on whether or not Discotek may have the rights to produce a Blu-ray copy, or even whether or not “Robot Carnival” has been given an HD or 4K transfer yet in Japan. But even if it hasn’t, a high-quality DVD print, the kind that Discotek excel as, is more than enough to satisfy this animation fan, and I’m sure many of you as well.
